At first glance to name of this drug appears to be that of either a very fast car or some sort of nasty water infection. It is In fact the name that has been given to a new anti Leukaemia drug which could offer hope to many people suffering from CML.
Professor John Goldman, Europe's leading authority on leukaemia, said: 'Usually these things are blown out of proportion, but this is real.' Dr David Secher, of the Cancer Research Campaign, said the drug is a product of a new phase of research into cancer treatment. 'In the next ten or 15 years, we are going to see better treatments for all types of cancer, including the common tumours,' he added.
British experts are taking part in the next, much larger, phase of tests on STI-571 ? due to begin early next year in the United States, the UK, France, Germany and Switzerland. The patients in the pilot study had chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), a form of the disease which progresses slowly before switching to a rapid and fatal acute phase.

Is Glivec the wonder drug to cure Leukaemia?
.
A ground breaking drug has become available to patients with the blood cancer chronic myeloid leukaemia. Glivec has been so successful in trials that the licensing authorities have made it available for public use in almost record time.
Now more than 6,000 people suffering from Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) have a real chance of survival. Around 1,000 people a year are diagnosed with the condition and around half are dead within five years.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar talks about his Leukaemia battle.
NBA legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar may be known to you as a top class Basket Ball player from many years ago,and if ,like me!, you have ever watched the comedy movie "Airplane" from 1980 (that long ago?) you will remember him playing the part of Co-Pilot Roger (over and out!) alongside Peter Graves and Leslie Neilson but did you know that 6 or 7 years ago he was diagnosed with CML?
Kareem is now in remission, but has pledged to use his fame and influence to help others with their battles. Massive respect to this wonderful man for using his public profile to help fight cancer....top bloke :-)

NICE Appraisal Of Dasatinib And Nilotinib For Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has updated its draft guidance on the use of dasatinib (Sprycel,made by Bristol Myers-Squibb) and nilotinib (Tasigna,made by Novartis) for chronic myeloidleukaemia.
Following the previous public consultation and subsequent independent Appraisal Committee meeting on 13 January 2010, both NICE and the appraisal committee agreed to split the appraisal of dasatinib and nilotinib for chronic myeloid leukaemia into two separate appraisals.
To effectively appraise a new treatment, the Committee compares it to an existing one. In this case, high dose imatinib (glivec, 600 mg or 800 mg per day) has been identified as a comparator for dasatinib and nilotinib for people who are 'resistant' to imatinib (standard treatment with imatinib (400 mg per day) has stopped working), although it clearly cannot be a comparator for people who cannot tolerate imatinib.

Can you help Shanta ?
Nahida Islam Shanta, a second year student of Dhaka medical college has been diagnosed with chronic myloid leukaemia very recently.
Shanta is admitted to cabin 43. Her White Blood Count is abnormally low. Since low immunity she's been given very high dose of antibiotics. Yet she's almost always having fever, cough, chest pain.
Her disease was diagnosed in feb 09. Bt she was ok on medicine. Stage II of her disease started about 18 may when she had to be taken to ICU. 2 June her Dr. said her bone marrow needed to be transplanted within 3-4 months.
so i appeal each and every person who is capable and willing to come forward to help this talented and potent young girl in her fight against CML.
