Sam’s desperate cry for help with stem cell transplant

.

A FORMER Shavington High School pupil in need of a stem cell transplant has issued a desperate cry for help.Sam Nelson, a 23-year-old Sandbach farm worker, currently has blood and platelet transfusions every week to keep him alive.

His best long-term hope is a bone marrow transplant – and he’s asking the people of South Cheshire to turn up at Willaston on Sunday to help find a matching donor.

“I try to keep my chin up as much as I can and I’m not too bad at the moment, although I’m a little bit short of blood,” said Sam, who moved from Hough to Sandbach two years ago.

“I’m having blood transfusions and platelets two or three times a week but I desperately need a transplant.”

Sam, who attended Wybunbury Delves Primary School, was diagnosed with the blood disorder aplastic anaemia and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) in December 2009

Dear Sam,
Your blog is right after mine so I happened upon it . I'm sorry about your illness,. I can't imagine your frustration. My 30 yr. old daughter was diagnoised with cancer last May and passed away in Oct. My husband and I are helping with her four children while her husband works. Can you use bone marrow from somewhere in the states. I'd love to be tested for you if you don't find anyone. And I love England. Let me know.

Hi Linda. Thanks for your comment on my blog :-). However I am not Sam, i just posted his appeal details on my Leukaemia and Lymphoma site to try and help him to find a donor. If you want to help him the best thing would be to contact a stem cell or bone marrow donation organization in the US (In the UK it is the Anthony Nolan Trust). Many thanks for your comments anyway.Best wishes.Andy :-)

Hi Andy
Just wanted to say thank you for posting Sam's appeal on your blog. We had a fantastic turnout yesterday and were touched by how kind people are in supporting Sam. It was such a boost for him to know that people are there for him, brilliant! Thanks to Linda too for offering to donate for him, we feel for you in your sad loss and appreciate how you would like to help Sam. At the moment Sam is good and keeps our spirits up, he's a breath of fresh air! We go down to London on Wednesday to meet with the transplant team and we will keep you posted with how he goes on. Thanks again, Marg & Tim, Sam's mum and dad xx

Hi Marg/Tim. Thanks for your comments, its always nice to know that people read my blog :-)
Posting Sam's appeal was the very least that I could do to try and help.
I really hope that Sam finds a donor soon and please pass on my best wishes.
