Vuvuzela news.........OR..,"The world cup gets the Horn!"

.

This particular piece of football supporters kit has made the news so much recently that I thought it apt to post at least one comment about it on my blog!

Vuvuzela,Lepatata or just plain "stadium horn", this simple instrument (if that is not too grand a title!) has had people talking, arguing and blowing since the beginning of the 2010 world cup, mostly because to some it is a great traditional supporters gadget, but to others it is the reason that all you can hear during a match is an infernal background noise!

Having watched most of the world cup matches so far,I tend to agree with those who think that although the Vuvuzela is a traditional part of South African Football, it is way,way overused, and, rather than enhance the atmosphere, it can ruin the experience for many non Vuvu fans.

Whilst most celebratory devices (drums, trumpets, rattles, air horns etc) are used on an occasional basis, and to celebrate an event in the match such as a goal being scored, Vuvuzela "players" tend to simply produce a a constant noise throughout the match, which has even lead to players expressing their annoyance at not being able to hear such unimportant things such as the Referee blowing his whistle!

Put it this way.If the noise was being produced by a faulty PA (Public Address) system, constantly emitting a monotone feedback throughout the game...would the "traditionalists" be so willing to put up with it ?

Anyway, here are links to a few more reports about the Vuvuzela and it's place in this years world cup celebrations:

You can even get an "iVuvuzela" App for your iPhone!

This is by no means the first time that the Vuvuzela has caused a stir.........

Love 'em or hate 'em I have a feeling that the Vuvuzela is here to stay! :-)

If only.....

.
If only there was as much money spent on finding a cure for cancer as there is spent on Televised sport events!.

Flicking through the channels you find footballers earning £70'000 per week, Formula one drivers earning £4-5 Million per year.Golfers playing a round in Morocco for a top prize of 1'361,205 euro's.
In a world were sport and entertainment pay such riches, yet the people that we trust the lives of our loved ones with, doctors, nurses ,care workers etc are so poorly rewarded by comparison, is it a surprise that modern day youngsters aspire to be singers, actors or sports people.
One day maybe far off in the future, the world may realise that if they want to save the seriously ill, feed the hungry and put a roof over the homeless, they need to re assess their love affair with celebrity and start to put more of their adoration on the souls in this world who truly do make a difference to the lives of others, and lets stop paying actors who pretend to be doctors more than real doctors...you know it makes sense!.

Chris Todd,Torquay United and Newport County footballer.......and Leukaemia Survivor.

Standard practice for a pre-match interview is to pick a subject who is sure to play. The best-case scenario for Chris Todd is that he will be among the substitutes when Torquay United face Coventry City in the FA Cup fourth round tomorrow — but that is exactly the point. Todd might be on the bench, ten weeks after having cancer diagnosed.

"A groin operation in Leicester last October had gone well and Todd’s injury was repaired. Just one small thing — a nurse noticed that he bled heavily when a needle was removed from his arm. Probably worth having a blood test to check everything was as it should be.

Oh, come on. A tough lower-league centre half such as Todd? Readiness to shed blood is part of the job description. “I’m OK, feeling fine, why should I?” he reasoned. But the nurse’s comment nagged away. A few days later, not quite sure why he was bothering, he went along to have that blood test. That was a Monday morning in mid-November. He got the results that evening. Swift service.

They told him he had chronic myeloid leukaemia. Bang: Chris Todd, 27, your life has changed for ever. And so began the quest to return to a healthy existence that he did not realise he had lost, so secretly was his body conspiring against him."

This is a great story with a happy ending. Chris Todd was a young guy with a promising football career ahead of him, then in November 2008 he was diagnosed with Leukaemia. In this video Chris explains what happened next.......

For a lot of people who are diagnosed with this illness the thought of what will happen to them is a worrying thought, but for Chris, who's career relies upon his physical fitness, the issues about his health could mean much more than to many.....

Husband and wife are now both fighting Cancer.

PREMIER League referee Mark Halsey and his wife Michelle are fighting back after a nightmare year when BOTH were diagnosed with cancer.

Michelle was told last New Year's Eve that she had leukaemia - then in August Mark learned he had a rare form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, cancer of the lymph glands.
Mark, 48, says: "It was devastating when we heard about Michelle. Then when I was told I had cancer, I was just numb. Your life flashes before your eyes. But you have to stay strong, really strong. Now, not one part of me thinks I will die.

"I have been told I have a 95 per cent chance of survival. At first I concentrated on that five per cent. But not now."
