So. How is MY Leukaemia doing these days ?

Well I am glad to report that so far it is behaving itself ! :-). August 15th  this year marks 11 years since my CLL diagnosis at Grantham Hospital during what i had believed to be a "routine" appointment!!

In the last 11 years I have gone from blood tests and prods every 3 moths to blood tests and check-ups every 12 months. As an added bonus I am now under the excellent care of Mr Tim Moorby,of the resident Haematology Consultants at the hospital I have worked at now for almost 21 years....so getting to my appointments is a relatively straight forward affair :-).

In the old days a decade or so ago I had to make my way to Grantham to see a random consultant {never quite sure who I would be seen by!) and the blood results would take between 7 to 10 days before they arrived at my GP surgery.....awaiting the results was a very stressful situation believe me !

So. I will be 51 in May, diagnosed in 2006 aged 40....now 11 years on...hopefully this little resume will give a bit of encouragement to anyone who is newly diagnosed.....i wish i could have read something like this early on in my journey because fear (and insomnia) had to be the worst aspects in the early years.

As my good friend (Sadly now departed ) Geoff Brocklebank told me in the dark weeks after my shock discovery..." You are more likely to die with CLL than from it".....that simple sentence was like an epiphany to me...and gave me the strength and drive to get my head in order...and to get involved in things such as this Blog. Thanks Geoff....you are sadly missed my friend, but you gave me the inspiration to get off my sorry ass and do something useful with my (new, post CLL) life  :-)

Until next time.

Andy

Arctic Blast 2015...Another Scirocco adventure soon to be underway :-)

I heard some great news today that another pair of brave souls are planning on setting off on an epic adventure a la Scirocco on the 1st March this year :-)

Here are a few details from their facebook "About" page:

  • In March brothers Tony and Paul Greer will undertake a daunting driving challenge. Having bought a car for under £1000 they will attempt to drive in a 5000 mile round trip to Nordkapp, the most northerly point in Europe it's possible to reach by car. Nordkapp is 2500 miles away from London on the northern tip of Norway, 700 miles inside the Arctic Circle. The brothers want to raise money and awareness of two charities that have personal importance to them. These are Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and the Antony Nolan charities who special in blood diseases and manage the national bone marrow register.

You can follow their preparations including a frantic hunt to find a suitable car (This was recently confirmed to be a Mk2 Scirocco!) and get everything organised before departing on Sunday 1st March.

  • Making Tracks - Arctic Blast has been supported by sponsors helping the brothers achieve their goal. You can help to by donating on our Justgiving Team page.

Their facebook page can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/ArcticBlast2015/info?tab=page_info

My famous fellow Leukaemia warrior Murray Walker is doing a talk for charity...

.

Murray Walker, the legendary voice of motor sport is performing (is that the right description?) a talk in August 2013 to raise money for another Leukaemia Charity called Leukaemia Busters (UK).

If you would like to go and see Murray (my all time favourite motor racing commentator by the way!). Follow the link below.

http://www.leukaemiabusters.org.uk/pages/murrayWalker.aspx

Tickets are selling fast!

I would love to go but sadly I will be with my family in Norfolk enjoying a well earned rest in the lovely resort of Hemsby !.

If you happen to read this Murray, hope you are well and well done for supporting a very worthy cause :-).

Typical BBC event. Roll call of celebrities..no mention of " common people's" efforts!

.

Children in Need raises £26.7m

Ahhh. As per usual the BEEB has patted itself on the back about the one good thing they haven"t ballsed up this year.

Children in need is a great event and is a great way to raise money to help kids.....but why do all the reports of efforts to fund raise always focus mainly on the celebrities?

Why does some multi millionaire singer get more praise and thanks than Mr Smith down the road who has spent all week in a bath of beans, or Mrs Brown who at 85 has made hundreds of knitted toys to sell and raise funds. The " common" folk who contribute without consideration about promting their latest film or new song, don't ever get enough recognition for their efforts.....if you don't believe me just read the report ( link above) by the BBC about the event and "spot the non celeb" fundraiser!......Mmmmmm!

In a year when the BBC has managed to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds of licence payers hard earned cash compensating a Director General who did under 60 days work in the post before throwing in the towel when things got difficult ( i thought the reason people got paid vast salaries is because they are of a " high calibre"?....apparently not!) to the tune of £450'000.Then. After NOT airing a Newsnight programme about Jimmy Saviles dirty life, they try to be too quick with the next programme and, without getting their facts right, they wrongly accuse a Peer of being a paedo!......which then costs the poor old licence fee payer another £185'000 quid!

By the way....i wonder how much the ex DG of the beed donated? Nothing in the report about that is there :-/.

It is so nice to see a program specifically raising funds for cancer research.

Come on folks.....give a few quid and let's help to beat this disease once and for all :-)

Hope they manage to raise some serious cash this evening.

Brilliant stuff. Well done channel 4 :-)

Wickes employees trek through Alaska and raise £35,000 for LLR

.

A team of 19 Wickes workers braved the wilderness of Alaska on an eight day trek, raising £35,695 and counting for partner charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

The team set off on Sunday, September 2, from the base of the Talkeetna Mountains, carrying 60lb packs for up to eight hours each day through the mountains, over glaciers and down rivers. They finally reached the finish point at Valdez two weeks later on September 16.

On the toughest day of the trek, the climbers scaled the equivalent of Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis - no easy feat for those team members who had never climbed a hill before setting off, let alone mountains.

Wickes chairman and Alaska Challenge team mate Jeremy Bird said: "The Alaska challenge was everything we hoped it would be; exciting, stretching, very tough at times but hugely rewarding for those that fought their way through wind, rain, snow, hail and sunshine - often all on the same day.

"Every member of the team achieved something they had thought might have been beyond them, like climbing a snow capped mountain or walking with a 60lb pack up a five mile hill or simply living in the wilderness for a week without soap. But, without doubt, the best bit was checking our fundraising on our return and seeing how much we'd raised to help beat blood cancer."

Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research's chief executive Cathy Gilman said: "What the team have completed in such a tough environment is incredible. Since becoming our charity partners Wickes colleagues, customers and suppliers have consistently gone 'above and beyond' to help us beat blood cancers - and there's no better example of that than an effort like this. We're very grateful for all their support.
"The valuable funds they are raising will help us find better treatments and cures for patients with blood cancers including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma."

Natasha Vraets (Al Karim) your sister in christ scam

.

Yes, yet another sick human being who not only tries to scam you but tells you she is a God fearing cancer suffering Christian!.

Anyway, thought you may want a heads up on this sad individual !.

content of SCAM Email:

I am Mrs. Natasha Vraets a widow suffering from long time illness (Cancer), I have some funds I inherited from my late loving husband Mr. Yusuf Nasri Al Karim, the sum of $9.5 USD Million which he deposited in bank here and I need a very honest and God fearing person that can use these funds for God's work, and 15% out of the total funds will be for your compensation for doing this work of God.

I took this decision because I don't have any child that will inherit this money. I don't want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly way. That is why I am taking this decision. I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going.

I found your email address from the internet and decide to contact you. Please if you would be able to use this fund for God’s work kindly reply me with this email:vraets.natasha@yahoo.fr

Your sister in Christ,

Mrs. Natasha Vraets"

I Like the passage "I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going."...So do we love...and it will be warm and give you a bloody god suntan!.

Mrs Vraets (God knows your real name :-) ) you are one sick puppy......

Any rich people out there who want to save a Scirocco ?

.

I guess that it's not a surprising fact that due to increases in the cost of...well everything really !I have had to take the decision to retire the old Scirocco to the driveway whilst I consider my options.

Running 3 cars in the UK is not a very good way of saving money, and sadly there is no real recognition for some bloke who runs a car to promote a charity......not being an MP I can't claim "expenses" for such an extravagance! :-)

Insuring the Golf TD has just cost me £500. The wife's Skoda Roomster cost almost £300 and the Scirocco (limited to 3000 miles per year) cost £150 .So having to choose which car I was going to use as my daily came down not to preference, but economy, so the Golf TD which returns a good 55mpg has now stepped into the Scirocco's shoes as my daily commuting vehicle (the Scirocco was costing me £13 per day in fuel as it could ,at best, manage approx 35-37 per gallon.

To add insult to injury I now have the Scirocco on the drive without MOT or Road Tax as they both expired in December. And to add injury to insult and injury...she has developed something of a swimming pool in her rear footwell's which has resulted in me having to remove the seats and strip back the carpets!.....and the battery keeps going flat!.......

If anyone reading this post fancies helping me keep the old girl (25 in March) on the road to continue her work with Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, please make yourself known :-)

In my experience an unused car is so much more likely to have a major breakdown than a daily drive, and i would hate that to happen to a car that has become something of a minor celebrity in the VW world.

Now.....when is the lottery being drawn again?

Air Ambulance Service Clothing Collection Scam

.

If you get a flyer through your door from the Air Ambulance Service DO NOT PUT OUT ANYTHING!. It is a scam that gives the impression that the collection is for an Air Ambulance Charity......IT IS NOT!

If you have received one of these flyers please get in touch and let me know. Better still if you manage to get pictures of the people who are involved with this scam or the vehicle that they use, let me have a copy and I will post it on this blog for all to see.

Better still...fill your bin bags with all the crap you have overflowing from your wheelie bin, wrap it in some old rags (in case they have a quick look inside!) then leave it and enjoy watching them snatch it away in the belief that it holds a few quids worth of decent clothing...NOT :-).

I hate scumbags that pertain to be working for the good of many when in fact they are simply lining there own greedy pockets.

The website www.airambulanceservice.org.uk does not exist.

The mobile number 07577940492 comes back as number not available.

Please tell others about this sick scam and don't let these people convert your clothing into beer money!.

Mum supports leukaemia charity after losing her son

.

WATCHING her baby son die of leukaemia at just 20 months old was a heart-breaking experience a mother hopes to help save others from going through.

Losing baby Conor in 2006 was devastating for Caroline Smith. Now, she is planning a tandem skydive to raise money for a charity which funds research into the causes, prevention and treatment of childhood cancer.

The skydive is two days after what would have been Conor’s seventh birthday.

UK Government to encourage charity donations at cashpoints.

.

One idea being tabled under the the Governments new "Big Society" drive is the option to allow people to donate to charity via new methods, one of which is via bank cashpoints.

It seems like a very good idea on the face of it,but the question that has not been answered very clearly so far is whether our donations via the cashpoint will still attract the Gift Aid bonus of 25p in the pound that all UK tax payers can claim as an extra bonus for their chosen cause.

Worryingly, it appears that far from gaining more cash for charities by offering this option, the Government may in fact save themselves rather a lot in tax relief by avoiding the tax break which turns a £10 donation into a £12.50 donation!.

Mmmmmm. Perhaps this "gift horse" needs it's mouth checking over a little more closely!

What do you think?

Jeremy Beadle was on TV last night.....

.

..And it was good to see that at long last all of the work that he did for a Children's Leukaemia Charity was recognised.

This amazing guy, so often lampooned and attacked by the press for no real reason at all...except that he was Jeremy Beadle, actually helped to raise millions...nay, tens of millions of pounds for the charity Children with Leukaemia, and yet, being the quite and modest chap that he REALLY was, he kept this side of his life very low key, choosing not to boast or brag about his involvement but instead, over many years, he worked like hell to help those who found themselves fighting blood cancer.

The question is,would all of the snide, slimy journalists who made cheap jokes and quick money at Jeremy's expense have come forward if THEY had been asked to make the slightest contribution to anyone Else's well being!, or if they have given their time to support any sort of charitable event without expecting heaps of adoration or monetary reward for giving up their time.....I would guess the answer would be a resounding "No!". Gobby Gits are always looking for a cheap stab at someone but as with most pond life of this ilk, they don't want to stand up and be counted themselves when things get difficult and they are asked to get involved.

Sadly,Jeremy Beadle died, aged 59 on the 30th January 2008.He died of Leukaemia having only recently being diagnosed with Kidney cancer less than a year earlier, yet all the way to the end of his life he still had time for a joke and brought a smile to those around him.

On his headstone the inscription reads "Ask my friends". And, unlike many celebrities these days, Jeremy Beadle had many TRUE friends who would be more than willing to talk with genuine fondness and respect about the life of this amazing, versatile and inspiring man.

R.I.P Jeremy Beadle, the world is a poorer place since your passing.

£84 Million Euro Lottery winner to give £70 million to charity!

.

This would be the headline that would be printed on the front of many newspapers if yours truly was the winner of last weeks Euro Millions. Sadly though it wasn't me, so this headline will have to wait a bit longer to be published :-)

saying that, I have a rather cunning plan to put in place if I should ever be lucky enough to win such an awesome amount of cash...it goes like this....

Step 1.Win £84 Million quid

Keep £14 Million to go a bit mad, help family, set up trust funds including a £5 million slush fund to assist people who spend their time doing good deeds!.

Step 2.Contact all the national newspapers and tell them that I intend to donate £70 Million to charity.

Step 3.Ensure that I then ask all the other 760+ people in this country (according to the rich list!) who have more than £84 Million in their bank accounts to dig in and donate at least £10 Million each.

Result?

760 x £10 Million = £760,000,000 + my £70'000'000 = £830'000'000 donation to various charities......how much good work could that do ?

Of course anyone of the 760+ who was too stingy to donate would be put on the "tight as a gnat's arse" list so that people could see who the really selfish gits where :-)

Wonder if I could claim gift aid on £70 million ? :-)

Just a quick heads up folks that there is currently a car for sale on Ebay which may interest you.It was a project car for The Mechanics Magazine for several years, and has rather a few "extra's" that you would not get on the standard model.

The car is a 1992 Ford Granada Scorpio 2.0Ltr.

If you fancy a flutter on the auction you will need to be quick as it ends in 2 days or so.Currently the price is sitting just above £500, so still a bargain to be had, and one with some interesting history :-)

Mission accomplished.Santa Claus delivered to Grotto as requested :-)

Well it was a bit of a rush the other day to say the least.Up at 07:30, dressed, washed, cleaned out rabbits (just 2 of them!),got ids up (always fun at the weekend...seem to be glued into their beds!). Checked car, loaded boxes of bits to sell for Leukaemia Research on my stall at the Christmas fair, then, after a VERY swift fried breakfast it was off on our way.

As is usual in situations when time is at a premium, my route was littered with the obligatory 38 tonners doing 40MPH,several tractors a la trailers doing about 20-25, and the occasional "Sunday Drivers" who, due to their belief that you can only enjoy a drive at under 50mph, will happily sit behind affore mentioned lorries/tractors for miles on end without seizing any oppertumity to overtake, no matter how safe it is!.

After finally working my way through the rolling road block that is the A17/A617, I arrived at my first port of call, Kings Mill Hospital, and there I had 2 jobs to do.The first job was to manufacture a number plate out of (this sounds like a blue peter project doesn't it ?) a piece of yellow card,a laminating sleeve,a black marker pen and some artistic licence !. After that was completed I then located an item that had been left at the Dept for me by Peter from the ITC Dept (Thanks Peter!).....mored of that later :-)

After getting back to the car i then discovered that my bubble machine had tipped over in the boot and had not only emptied its entire contents of soap suds into the carpet, but this had also now left me needing to locate some more mixture for use in the parade. I decided to detour to the local Tesco xtra store.

"We only sell bubble mixture in summer" the lady at Tesco's told me!......."Why" i asked, "don't people blow bubbles in winter?".We left the store and stopped only to top up the fuel tank which was reading a little low.

We arrived at Mansfield Woodhouse at approx 11:05, and immediately went to my parents house to give Scarlett a quick wash as during the trip over from Sleaford she had aquired an awfully dirty coat of filth.
My parents had already left to go to the house down the road that is the storage location for Santa's sleigh, and due to that fact i had no access to my dads pressure washer.....damn!.
Looking around the back yard I found a bucket of rainwater which i took, dropped in a small amount of car wash liquid (which i had in the boot luckily) and then performed the worlds quickest handwash !.

Once the car was presentable we drove the few hundred yards down to Snata's secret transport storage depot (a garage on Rose Lane...whoops...it's not secret anymore!), at which point we hitched up the sledge and after a quick systems check (lights!) we drove over to the carpark of the Greyhound pub our pick up point for Saint Nick.

Unfortunetly Santa was not present at this location when we arrived, but after sending off a scout (my dad) to locate said Mr Claus he arrived a few mins later in his civis and using his "Off duty" name of Bill!.

One slight problem which was noted at this point was that "Mini Me" ,my son who was dressed as a raindeer with flashing nose, became slightly suspicious of the bloke who claimed to be Santa, so we sent him off with his sister to have a five minute walk around the shops on the high street and hey presto, when he arrived back,Bill had gone, but a rather convincing Santa was now sat in his sleigh!. Just as I was quietly congratulating myself as having pulled a master stroke of desception n convincing Mini me of the arrival of the "real" Santa, he looked at me as only a 6 year old can and said "It's OK dad, I know it's not the real Santa 'cos I saw the suit in his Morrisons plastic carrier bag.......damn, i had been rumbled !.
Not to lose this battle of whits I came out with a corker of a reply,"Actually Andy it IS the real Santa, but...well you know how Spider man and Super Man only dress in their "Super" clothes when in action? Well Santa is the same, he only gets his red gear on when on duty...otherwise people would be forever stopping him and putting in never ending requests for presents!.....
"Mmmmm....., i never thought of that dad........but don't worry, i won't tell anyone else that this is THE Santa....we'll keep it just between ourselves!". Sorted ! :-)

After dressing  myself up into a passable copy of the STIG from BBC top gear (this was what the package was that Peter had left for me at my Dept!) we started the engine.....and waited.

The parade came past the entrance to the Greyhound carpark, and we slid gracefully into the back of it,lights on,Stig at the wheel and Santa doing a fine job waving to the kids along the way.

10 mins later we arrived at Turner hall and parked up.Santa left the sleigh, i cahnged back into my civvies (after a struggle with the catch on the helmet!) and we then set up the charity table selling Chritmassy bits and bobs for Leukaemia Research (we made £60).

We arrived back home at 8pm after a smashing fish supper from the Chippy on Vale Road...very nice!, and that,as they say, was that...until next year perhaps :-)
